Personal High Profile: Creative Production and Enterprise Control

Enterprise Control and Creative Production occur as Personal Highs in about 3.5% of the general business sample. This profile represents interests associated with both a high need for creativity and, at the same time, a need to "own a process." Although entrepreneurs may have a number of different profile types, this is the most common Personal High combination among that group. Individuals with this profile not only want to create new products, services or ideas, but also want to be the person who is directing the overall strategy of the project. They are more likely to enjoy project-oriented environments than "steady state" environments and are likely to prefer projects that have shorter time horizons.

If the interest in Creative Production is very high, there is likely to be a strong preference for work roles where the primary task is to create something that does not yet exist, such as a new product design, a new service delivery model, new packaging for a product, new advertising copy, or a new marketing strategy. Individuals with Creative Production in this very high range often enjoy the early phase of business projects the most, when idea generation and original problem solving are the core requirement for success. They often become less interested once a new business process has been established and the criterion for success shifts to becoming an effective day-to-day manager of a proven process. It is not unusual for individuals with Very High Creative Production scores to have career paths with a higher than usual number of job changes (either moving from company to company or from job to job within a company): the pursuit of situations demanding creativity is their primary career motivator. This search for creative opportunity should not be interpreted as a "problem with commitment", although individuals with this profile may be vulnerable to a misunderstanding concerning their more frequent job changes.

Individuals with this profile, if not literally entrepreneurs, are likely to enjoy roles that have an entrepreneurial "flavor," such as leading a new product development team, establishing a new business unit, taking responsibility for a turn-around situation or identifying new investment opportunities (particularly if Quantitative Analysis is in the High range). Regardless of organizational size, individuals with this profile will prefer a work environment that has a genuine entrepreneurial culture that is project-oriented, values initiative and idea generation, and that pushes decision-making authority as far "down" the organizational hierarchy as possible.

When interpreting this profile, it is helpful to consider the elevation on the Managing People and Relationships business core function scale. If Managing People and Relationships is in the High range, it is more likely that the characteristics described above will be best realized in a management or general management role. If Managing People and Relationships is in the Low range, it is more likely that these interests will be expressed either in a professional services role or in a role that that is entrepreneurial with a focus on strategy, marketing, new product development or business development rather than day-to-day management of operations.

Although people with this Personal High profile enjoy careers in a range of industries and functions, there are a number of industries or functions that have a high degree of association with this profile because of the work activities that are typically prominent features of those areas. In the paragraphs below, we will discuss the function or industry areas that have a strong association with this profile for which CareerLeader™ provides CareerLeader™ Profiles. We suggest that you study these CareerLeader™ Profiles in detail. They will give you an overview of the interest patterns, work rewards and business abilities that are associated with career satisfaction and success in the careers discussed. We do not mean to suggest that this is an exhaustive list of careers that you should consider, nor that you will automatically find satisfaction with these careers. The Personal High combination of Enterprise Control and Creative Production is strongly associated with career paths where the desire to control an operation and make strategic decisions is combined with creativity in terms of new products or services, new approaches to business tactics and strategy, or the identification of new business opportunities. CareerLeader™ Profiles at the top of the list of good matches with this profile include Entrepreneurship and Marketing and Marketing Management (note: most of these profiles are not available with the Tour; only the Management Consulting profile is available). If you have an elevated Quantitative Analysis score, the Private Equity Investment profile also belongs near the top of the list of potential matches. Advertising, and leadership roles in Communications/Public Relations also have potential (in the latter it is more likely that the Creative Production score will be dominant). Management Consulting and Strategic Planning and Internal Consulting also provide the potential for a positive match particularly if Enterprise Control is higher than Creative Production and Theory Development and Conceptual Thinking is also elevated. General Management also has potential, particularly if Enterprise Control is higher than Creative Production and if the Managing People and Relationships and/or Influence Through Language and Ideas scales are also elevated. If you have a High or Very High range score in Application of Technology, you should review the Research and Development Management profile as well.

As with all profiles, it is important to consider the effect of the other business core function scales and in particular those other scales that are also either Personal Highs or in the High to Very High range. Below are some points to keep in mind if you have, in addition to a Personal High score on Creative Production and Enterprise Control, either a Personal High or a High/Very High range score on one of the following business core function scales. Pay particular attention to these points if you have a Personal High on that scale:

  • Application of Technology: A Personal High or High range score on this scale along with Personal Highs on Creative Production and Enterprise Control suggests entrepreneurial or new product development roles in companies that provide technologically-oriented products or services. Product management, project management and new product development roles in hardware and software manufacturing companies or in information systems services companies would be examples of positions of this nature. This combination is also a good match for roles that require thinking broadly and creatively about the systems needs of organizations, regardless of the nature of the organization's product or service.

  • Quantitative Analysis: A Personal High or High range score on this scale along with Personal Highs on Creative Production and Enterprise Control suggests entrepreneurial or new product development roles in finance-oriented environments where there is an emphasis on new ideas and creativity. Examples would be roles in venture capital, leveraged buy-out organizations or real estate development. Positions calling for designing new financial products or services or new ways of presenting or marketing such products would also be potential matches for this profile.

  • Theory Development and Conceptual Thinking: A Personal High or High range score on this scale along with Personal Highs on Creative Production and Enterprise Control suggests new product and service development roles in environments where idea generation, particularly in the more conceptual realm, is the major focus. Some examples of these environments would be: management consulting, strategic marketing, business development, higher education and public policy.

  • Counseling and Mentoring: A Personal High or High range score on this scale along with Personal Highs on Creative Production and Enterprise Control suggests entrepreneurial and new product or service development roles in high "interpersonal transaction" environments such as high customer-contact service management settings (for example: resorts and leisure, food service, retail, executive search, executive out-placement, human services and travel industries). Individuals with this profile may also find satisfaction in leadership positions in not-for-profit and public service organizations and in companies with a high social value product or service (for example: health care, higher education, educational products or services, or environmentally-conscious products or services).

  • Managing People and Relationships: Individuals with this profile are endorsing interests associated with creativity, strategic leadership and day-to-day "line" management roles. Individuals with this combination of interests want to make strategic decisions and be direct operating managers. They typically bring skills in relationships, networking and alliance-building to their role as leader, and they see the task of leading people as a medium for creative expression.

  • Influence Through Language and Ideas: A Personal High or High range score on this scale along with Personal Highs on Creative Production and Enterprise Control suggests a leadership style that emphasizes roles in environments that demand creativity in terms of new products or services, offer products or services that are creative in nature (for example: the media industry, advertising, entertainment, art-related, etc.) or that call for continual business development activity. This profile is a positive match for marketing roles generally, and for leadership roles in environments that are entrepreneurial, new, small, or growing rapidly. With a High range score on Influence Through Language and Ideas, there is an emphasis on communication and influence that is added to the themes of creativity and "owning a process," creating a profile that often sets top organizational leadership as a goal.
